Trolling through the Government Documents section here at Tech the other
day. The hard way, walking down and looking for interesting volumes
instead of searching for keywords in the online database. I prefer the
raw data sometimes instead a filtered summary eh?
Anway, take a look for the yearly volumes of:
Bureau of Criminal Justice Statistics
Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics 1991
(our library is under the budget knife, no 1992 :-( )
our call number here was J29.9/6:991
cover page showed ordering info:
Superintendent of Documents
US Government Printing Office
Washington, DC 20402
Stock No. 027-000-01343-1
ISBN No. 0-16040397-0
This is a very thick and complete set of surveys on *many* topics.
Such surveys as asking a target group of college freshmen for example
if they thought homosexual activity should be illegal, answer was surprisingly
high on the YES side I thought. Also the stat's on self-defense Kleck refers
to, murder, etc are in there. I'm really impressed with this stuff
compared to the FBI UCR, which now looks incredibly thin by comparison.
This is the "BJS" you will se references to.

Another book:
Our call # J 1.96: F33
Report to the Attorney General on Systems for Indentifying Felons Who
Attempt to Purchase Firearms.
October 1989
Task Force on Felon Identification in Firearms Sales
Interesting analysis of costs and benefits of several levels of
background checks.
-----------------
There was a very odd short book by DOJ called I
think "Myths about Crime". It is way out of date, but the
1-page format with Statement of Myth, followed by a refutation
with cites was very good. Wish it had been updated.
